=======MODERATOR COMMENT=========

Dear MTIDers:

I will try to summarize the ongoing discussions towards formation
of a body (?IAMT) to spread standardization protocols and
certification of the same:

1) I stand corrected - apparently money will not be an issue.:o)

2) What appears to be the issue - are there enough motivated
professionals, ready to give for the cause?

3) More importantly can these individuals collectively ensure
that the truth is propagated and maintain credibility?

I have a few suggestions:

Let's move the discussion off this list to a new forum:

Please go to The Club at MT India.

http://63.74.112.37/theclub/Default.cfm

Under Local Chapters, select IAMT.

Please register as an individual user if not already registered.
Corporate users are not allowed to post here.

Please join the discussion list- so that we know your identity
and location.( This will also allow you receive posts in your
mail)

Let us take it from there.

BTW - I still need a volunteer/volunteers to monitor this
discussion. Will someone volunteer please?

Regards to all,

Subject: Formation of IAMT ...

Dear Dr Amit,

I have been observing the goings on regarding  the formation of
IAMT. While you will find my name under the 'yes' category  (and
I stand by it), I thought I must share my experience, when I
embarked  on a similar mission,  along with a few other friends
who were then running MT training institutes and MT production
centers.

1.    As association called Association of IT enabled Services
(AITES) was started in Bangalore in February 1999 by a few
organizations which were involved in MT  business (training and
production) and in other IT enabled services. The executive
committee comprised of some respected figures in the industry (I
mean in those days !)

2.    AITES approached the department of IT of the Govt. of
Karnataka, requesting it to act as the apex body for regulating
and enforcing the norms set by AITES, to award
affiliation/certification to training institutes and  to award
Diploma to those who pass out of the affiliated institutes.

3.     The Government department was very favorably disposed to
the idea, as there were no norms available then. Further, quite a
number of MT training institutes had started mushrooming,  each
institute claiming to maintain 'American standard's and to have
been  'affiliated by AAMT' or 'recognized by AAMT' ; In fact one
such institute even published the logo of AAMT, of which it
claimed corporate membership. It also offered franchise for such
loose training arrangement, all over karnataka  !!

4.     As professionals in the line, we knew all these hype meant
nothing to add any value to the quality of training, but the
public at large was indeed fascinated and enrolment to the
training poured in - and the rest is history, as you know.

5.    The government started receiving complaints from students
of some of these MT institutes of unfair practices and unkept
promises ; and it was keen to bring in some orderly way of
working for the industry.

6.    I was requested by one of the executive committee members
of AITES to prepare specific standards for MT training : to cover
faculty qualifications, entry norms for students, course
contents, syllabus, duration, infrastructure requirements,
training methodology, testing & evaluation procedures, course
fees, internships, salary norms on completion of the course and
related matters. We were also to address promotion norms to the
position of Editor and proofreader, after some months of
experience as MTs.

7.   I spent quite some time and put in the best of efforts,
along with a senior practicing Doctor,a senior English professor
(both have very good experience in training MTs) and an
experienced QA professional from the pioneers in the MT industry
in the country.

8.    I presented the standards prepared by us to the committee
meeting and the matter was thrown open for discussions.Trust
me, most of the committee members who were running MT training
institutes did not quite appreciate the standards, for obvious
reasons ; and the matter died a natural death. I then concluded
that for MT profession to get due respectability in
India, there must be a strong enforcing authority ; I wonder if
businessmen who run MT units and who have individual interests
and agenda, would ever be able to come together and collectively
agree on such standards.Even if accepted, how many would
really follow or implement the same in their MT
training/production units is a question that will perhaps remain
unanswered.

What was true of MT months back, is fast becoming true of Call
Centers-you suddenly find a number of Call center schools &
colleges all over the country offering 'crash courses' to become
Ace Call Center Agents. I am sure this field will also meet with
the same fate of MT in the near future.

I am hence of the view that while the proposed IAMT can set the
norms and the standards, enforcing the same should be left to a
statutory body ; and it should not be a typical licensing body,
but a professional one with the idea of adding value to the
industry as a whole, and with a very helpful attitude..

It may  hence be worth your while to approach the department of
IT of  the government of India with the proposals of the IAMT, to
get the same accepted by the industry members.

Please let me know if I can be of any assistance in this regard.
I would only be too glad to be associated with your efforts to
bring in dignity and value to the MT and other IT enabled
services industry in India.  What is very critical in this
context is not merely INITIATIVE but FINITIATIVE too !!

Best of luck.

Sincerely,

R. Viswanathan

Dear Amit & Mr. Jeya

Thanks for writing to me. I am not an MT by myself but my company
develops industry-specific ERP solutions as well as customised
software solutions. I am keen on starting an MT training +
production unit but have been researching this for over a year.
That was the reason I subscribed to MT Digest over a year ago.
Believe me I have learnt a lot from this forum. When I feel that
I can do justice to trainees, only then I will commence both
training and production.

I am keen to share my knowledge/experiance with others and
thereby learn from them too. This is a contnuing quest for
excellence which can be promoted through well meaning
Association. It is for this reason I immediatly offered to
contribute towards it. I am open to ideas/suggestions from
serious minded people.

One word of caution is required here. The effort should best be
done with like minded people only and have a solid base. All
ideas about this are welcome.

Best Regards

Dear Mr. Amit:

I could not understand what exactly you meant by starting a
nonprofit organization. Contributing Rs. 500 is not a problem,
what I feel is most of them have not got the concept clear. Can
you please tell me more about it.

I hope you understand me, as I am not here in this field long
time I am in this field only for the past two years. So please
elaborate on your ideas.

Respected Amit ,

Please go ahead with the idea. We really need an
Indian chapter for Medical Transcriptionists. I am
working as Medical Transcription faculty at College of
Allied Health Sciences, MAHE (Manipal Academy of
Higher Education), Manipal, Karnataka. We have a Post
graduate programme in Medical Transcription combined
with Medical Records. Our first batch of students will
be passing out in December 2001. We have therefore,
always felt the need to have an organization which
will standardize the MT education throughout India.

So, you have my vote for it. Best of luck.

Dear Dr. Amit,

I like the idea of IAMT.  It is just that we all have
to contribute and make it as one big organization.
MTs in the USA are independent whether they work for
transcription companies or individually.  Here there
may be apprehension in terms of the transcription
companies who treat their employees as 'bonded' and
are scared that they may go away from them if they
know too much.

However, my best wishes to you and I would like to join
the organization myself.

Dear Amit,

I was pleasantly surprised to see a considerable rise in the
number of supporters to this honorable cause, from 12 to 33 in a
couple of days! And people like Keyoor Vaishnav seem to be very
well-disposed towards this noble idea, ready to extend an
unqualified support both financially and infrastructurally. At
last the Sun seems to rise in this Sunrise industry! Now we can
start of thinking buying a wreath for laying on the foundation
stone! Amit, you should celebrate this defeat.

As a one of the reputed MT institutes in Hyderabad, having two
hundred MTs, we are ready to offer all the help needed to
institutionalize this idea.

Subject: RE: MTIndia Digest #065

Dear Amit

Medical Transcription, like Software is a People business. I have
been in the Software Industry for some time and I find many
similarities in the two Industries. Yes, the remarkable
difference is the maturity in the Industries. Software Industry
has come a long way, from the time it started. It has matured. MT
is still growing up, in leaps and bounds.

The big similarity of people is what has spurred Med-e-Com to
incubate Entrepreneurs in the Industry to own a fair share of
their effort. Not only in terms of salary, but also in terms of
Profit sharing, stock options and benefits, which are synonymous
with, people in Software than in MT.

Med-e-Com is a Healthcare Service provider based in the heart of
the Silicon Valley in USA. We are consolidating marketing in US
by acquiring, merging and partnering with companies in USA and at
the same time, building capacities for execution in India.

MT's in India, who are at key positions and so called the
stalwarts in delivering Quality for their companies, have been
receiving, to say the least, much less than what they are worth.
In our interactions with many people, they have shown active
interest in being Owners than being Managers. The spirit never
ceases to amaze me!

So, Med-e-Com came up with an idea to incubate the talent hidden
in these people and unleash it to its full potential.  We are in
talks with several such bright and talented (so called!)
Supervisors and Production Managers who have the skill, but lack
resources to realise their dream. Med-e-Com is filling the gap
for them. I think this is one of the ways in which we can
acknowledge the technical skills of the people in India and to
let them prove their real worth.

I also believe that this is just the beginning and foresee a
bright future for MT in India. Also include my support for the
IMTA forum.

Warm Regards

Subject: Re: The MT Times

Amit,

The formation of a consortium of Medical Transcription companies
in India is currently underway.  I am the Executive Director of
an American Training company that specializes in teaching
American Dialects, Grammar and Culture to Transcriptionists and
Software Professionals.  During my eighteen months of training in
various cities in India, I have become somewhat familiar with
some of the woes of both the companies and the transcriptionists.

I am also a former transcriptionist myself of over 12 years in
the United States and a member of AAMT..  On a return trip to
Ohio in May, I intend to look into organizing support
organizations here in India, and of course will establish a
nonprofit base there for this organization.  I have researched
and began contact for U.S. funding for this.  My company is also
currently forming it's own service to further facilitate the
home-base design here in India.  In my state alone, (Ohio) there
are more than 300 home-based transcriptionists.  This is a
lucrative business, (though maybe not as lucrative as the stories
say), but it may help many individual transcribers here who are
having difficulties with training costs which do not bear fruit
of actual work.

I would appreciate any feedback and/or assistance
(administrative) you may be willing to offer.
