Dear MTIDers:

I quote myself, from the latest issue of the MT Times:

"And here are the "Aye"s. Exactly twelve! The figure does sound
prophetic:o)"

Mind you - I did not say pathetic!! And these are some fresh
volunteers, as of today:o)

12+21 = 33, the score stands now!

I draw some solace from Ms. Olson's response: "AAMT was started
with about the same amount of individuals that have said yes to
your proposition AND I might add, no one had any money.  BUT WE
HAD A DETERMINATION AND A DREAM. The business owners in
India could do a little more to encourage the India association.
Too many of India's business owners don't want to give, they only
want to get - MONEY."

I do suspect many business owners would prefer not to see their
MTs get "too" professional - might hurt their business
interests!!  On the flip side, I do see a lot of Indian MTs
unwilling to contribute to their own cause - not in terms of
money but in terms of commitment and effort. But as you said it
"Rome was not built in a day".

Visalam says "Has there been a sustained effort to start such an
organization, and has it fallen through for want of enthusiasm?
Most of us, including myself, are not even aware of such an
effort."

Well...........

I think I need to quote from a mail I sent to some 200 online
Indian MTs and Business leaders in Jul '99:

-------------------------------------------------------------
We feel today it is more important than ever to form an alliance
amongst ourselves, with a view to standardize, guide and
represent our sector; such that we hold and expand on the ground
we have made.

As we consider that time is of essence, and see none of the major
players in the industry coming forth to take the lead, we are
launching a forum - MTIndia at www.mtindia.org which should be
launched by the first week of September. The site will be
initially hoisted with sections on a bulletin board, yellow
pages, free classifieds, and a guide.

We visualize that we are at the dawn of an era that will see the
corporate Indian MT sector emerging as a viable and professional
entity, and as an essential constituent of the global healthcare
services.

The goal of this forum will be :

- To be a source of useful, up-to-date and accurate information
on Indian medical transcription business and the global industry.

- To provide a forum for Indian industry representatives and
professional transcriptionists to exchange information, and
provide a strong platform to project themselves and their
business interests globally.

- To act as a guide to the Indian medical transcriptionists and
industry on initiatives in setting, recommending and ensuring
high business standards while embracing ethical business
practices, and taking an active role in protecting health
information confidentiality.

- To promote superior performance standards for Indian Medical
Transcription Industry in the areas of technology, training,
quality, marketing and growth.

- To promote education, and development in the field of medical
informatics.

- To stimulate and arouse the corporate medical transcription
sector to form an alliance or association as a non-profit making
organization under the Indian Societies Act, with a view to
further propagate the above goals and present an acceptable face
with which the world can confidently interact.
--------------------------------------------------------------
I would not be the appropriate person to comment on what MTIndia
has achieved, however we do have a "Forum", or this discussion
would not have happened!

Anil Nair says "Further you can also think in the lines of a
forum for MT owners similar to MTIA." Just my views Anil, but I
think that we are so small today that one organization should be
able to look after both our needs.

Friends - I do see things moving!! I will prepare a basic
questionnaire and a slightly detailed opinion poll. The essence is
that we be ready to give - and not just take.

Dr. Chatterjee,

Just to keep your information correct, AAMT was started with
about the same amount of individuals that have said yes to your
proposition AND I might add, no one had any money.  We were
sorely underpaid!  BUT WE HAD A DETERMINATION AND
A DREAM. Perhaps AAMT has only a four digit membership but these
are the members that are truly professionals and not takers.  You
will see more individuals sitting for certification in this
country in the future;  of this I can assure you.  Our
regulations will demand it as well as criteria established by
healthcare facilities to provide high quality, legal
documentation.

Perhaps your newsletter does not go to every MT in India and
perhaps the business owners in India could do a little more to
encourage the India association.  BUT, as you say, it's all about
MONEY.  Too many of India's business owners don't want to give,
they only want to get---MONEY.

Furthermore, India has only know and educated individuals in the
medical transcription industry for the past 4 to 5 years.  As you
know, Rome was not built in a day.

I would encourage you to continue to pursue this association, no
matter how small.

Sincerely,

Stella Olson, CMT

Hello,

You had asked, "Is it time to lay a wreath (on the idea of an
Indian association for MTs)"  I'd say, "Absolutely not."  Has
there been a sustained effort to start such an organization, and
has it fallen through for want of enthusiasm?  Most of us,
including myself, are not even aware of such an effort, and I
believe we would welcome it, and be ready to pay towards it.
Besides, many transcription companies would (or should) greet
this idea with great enthusiasm and some financial sponsorship.
Imagine being able to standardize the quality of training in
India. Imagine being able to hire a certified MT, and knowing
exactly what "certified" meant.

Someone has remarked that even in the US, membership of the AAMT
is only in four digits.  Perhaps; but the prestige and authority
of the AAMT is not in doubt.  To say that you are a qualified CMT
implies that you are certified by the AAMT, and it certainly
carries weight, whether in the US or abroad. Many ads in the US
insist upon this certification as a prerequisite.   A similar
organization in India would carry equal clout.  Such
standardization would also improve our standing in the US market.
Currently, there are several ads that openly state,"NO INDIANS
PLEASE."

Dear Amit:

Don't give up the idea of IAMT yet!! It may be an idea that needs
to ripen a bit. I foresee that this could be a positive thing in
the future. I would be willing to donate Rs 500 for this, even
though I am sort of a bystander, yet have been to India 3 times
to teach MT. I have close contacts with my former students, and
am now working in an MT service in California, as well as
teaching MT and Medical Terminology at the local community
college.

Yours truly,

Ann C. Barton, CMT

Subject: MTs - get together

Respected Amit & MTIDers,

I was obliged to receive a very positive reply from
you. I am thankful to Janram for giving me courage and
keeping my hopes alive.

It is worth thinking, that all of us coming together
to solve our problems. After all of us have the very
same problem, but with a very little difference. And
after all 'ITS OUR PROBLEM'!! we should not expect
someone else to solve it for us. So at least, for
myself, I agree with you that 'LET US HAVE A IN -
HOUSE POLL AND PROCEED'

I do agree with Vineet Gupta that 'WHY BLAME?'
He sticks to the point that 'its your performance and
you will get a job if your performance is good'.
But what about the training centers that cut short
the course from 6 months to 4 months and try to convince
the students that:- a 60% accuracy also works well;
you have editors to  check your errors, so go on
repeating blunder mistakes and type it all the way
without thinking of the reference to the context.

When we say that MT in India has a very bright future,
we ought to gain more and more perfection in it, and
not argue with the trainee school masters that has
been a miser in giving us the total knowledge about
it.

Let us get together and try to find a solution on it.
I end up with hope and luck to all of us!!

Dear Dr.Amit,

The MT Digest bought out by you is an excellent one
and further the idea to form a forum of Medical
transcriptionist is just fantastic. Further you can
also think in the lines of a forum for MT owners
similar to MTIA.

Further I would also raise an issue as to how to cut
out the middlemen for getting the orders directly from
US.

Looking forward to your reply.

Dear Amit,

Let me assure you the MT scheme in India is meant for those who
have no job elsewhere and have no hope of finding one either....

The starting pay is pathetic and not many reach the higher
echelons...

Scamsters abound... one company in Delhi actually offers a job of
HOME MT where one would have the privilege of PAYING the
company Rs.25,000 as refundable deposit, work under inspection
for 45 days and billing would start after the 45th day which
means no money for (45 + 60) days.... amazing....

I hope that any association you start would have a CODE OF
CONDUCT for its member companies.

Yours sincerely,
R.Pereira

Dear Amit Chatterjee,

It has been a pleasure reading your MT times regularly for the
past several months. We are a Company called Sagar Infoscribe
(India) Pvt Ltd located in Bangalore, involved in MT training and
production.

IAMT was formed in 1998-99 and they had their meeting  two yrs
ago. After this, there has been no news about them. I would like
you to give me an update on this. We as Medical Professionals,
quality is of utmost importance. This has not been consistent in
our MT industry, because of many reasons which can be discussed
in a proper platform.

If you happen to come to Bangalore, please drop in for more
discussions and  also online.

Yours truly,

Dr P.S.Eashwarnath
