Do reply. =======MODERATOR COMMENT========= Dear MTIDers: If nothing else, I will try to be transparent and candid. Karin's post took me to the good old snow clad days - patrolling the slopes in full-tracked snowmobiles in Gulmarg, at the High Altitude Warfare School, and racing for supplies on snow scooters at Sciachen - even for a pound of fresh bread or meat !:) Reminences of an old man...:) But back to sweaty Calcutta or overloaded Bangalore, life is as static! So back to slog... Kulkarni says "When you train a MT, you need to recover the training costs and earn.I am not convinced by your opinion that training should be considered as cost. Probably this is the reason why new MT companies are charging for training and then they are letting them off since they dont get MT work. " I will translate into simple terms - when an organization trains, it expects to recover costs of training in the future from the same people they invested in training. All well and good! That does not imply inadequate training - companies who are charging for training, and "then they are letting them off since they dont get MT work", did not appropriately train them. Plain and simple - they should have considered training as a genuine business - and would have reaped high dividends from MT Service Organizations by their appropriate placements. "Many people from Health Scribe and Heartland did that, they took free training and changed ships? What security does the early entrant have." HRD is not a term I have invented - in a knowledge based industry, if you succumb to the call for immediate profits, do not expect your employees to stand by you. "Lot of students are paying huge amount of fees and are then swindled by the management, who invited this action: The students themselves by leaving the company after getting trained." Paid education is a misnomer in India - non existant! All acceptable education systems in India today are heavily govt. sponsored. To train an entry level MT - cost to company is, by my calculations - Rs 70,000 spread over seven months or about 1600 USD. How can you profess to impart this education in half the time and at one forth of that cost? And this is only applicable to train candidates who are equvalent of 10th grade as per US English standards on the TOEFL scale. 70 % of so professed Indian MTs have extremely poor English schooling background, and will take three times that effort in expenses and time to reach satisfactory standards. "If many students are being swindled then many MT companies have closed down due to such attitudes of students." Kindly name me one MT company which closed down because of this - they suffered financially, opted in for paid training, covertly subsidised, but that's it. "So, I think contract issue should be enforced and the choice remains with the company. MT companies cannot do CHARITY, they are in business too." I have an axe to grind over any such contract issue - If an organization is good, it will retain its employees by good HRD policies. I had a lifetime of contract with the Indian Army but opted out, our next defence minister will be of the same creed - maybe you should be sitting in the PMO's office as an advisor! But beware - any contract can be broken - otherwise it is plain bonded labor. Manasi Adivarekar "What about all these people who are paying such a lot of money though they cannot afford wasting all this amount just to learn something that has no future? Or are all MT's are supposed to be EMPTY's?" Manasi, MT has a great future in India - whether you will be able to leverage it, only time can tell! Keep heart, slog and best of luck. Subject: Darwin Awards Hi all! I'm sure you all know about the "Darwin Awards," when someone does something incredibly stupid and doesn't always live to tell the tale. Well, the names have been withheld to "protect the innocent," but below is a paragraph from a transcription I did very recently. For real! Karin "He is here today as a result of injuring himself on March 10, 2001. He describes a rather bizarre injury as having occurred when he was snowmobiling, went off a jump, the machine landed awkwardly and broke the handle. He got a few bumps and bruises on that. After the incident, he towed his snowmobile to his cabin. The next day, he was loading his snowmobile with the broken handle on a trailer. He got it started up the trailer, then he thought he would just start the engine and ease it up into the trailer. Unfortunately, when he started it up and gave it some gas to climb the trailer ramp, the throttle went wide open and he and the snowmobile flew over the top of his truck, went through the air, struck another camper truck, went straight down with the snowmobile, causing him to fly off. His wife, who witnessed this, stated he was fifteen to twenty feet in the air before he landed." Comment?

> Subject: MT scene in India - Ms. Rukmini's observations Dr. Amit, Congrats to you and Ms. Rukmini for the wonderful and erudite analysis of the state of affairs in India relating to MT. What she says is eminently sensible and scholarly, if I may say. Persons like Dr Amit and Mr.Dewang Mehta, the ebulient president of NASSCOM and of course our sober Minister for IT, Mr. Mahajan can do yeomen service to the country by helping bring some regulations for the healthy growth of the MT industry and it's sustenance. > Subject: Re: The MT Times Hello Amit: You seem to profess the idea of non-contractual agreement for employment. Then what about the company who has trained and other new MT company entrants that take them away. When you train a MT, you need to recover the training costs and earn, when a new MT compay wants to snatch away, they can afford to pay better salaries because they have not incurred training costs. Such ppl, when they are bound, do not keep exploring opportunities. Many people from Health Scribe and Heartland did that, they took free training and changed ships? What security does the early entrant have. I am not convinced by your opinion that training should be considered as cost. Probably this is the reason why new MT companies are charging for training and then they are letting them off since they dont get MT work. When such MT 's are blowing horn, they deserved it, 'coz the senior MTs did not have the ethics. Even today in US, contracts are existing. I think it is more because of the ethics in our country that is forcing the companies to get contracts. I know lot of companies that are not entertaining the news MTs who have just passed out of training. If MTs can't maintain ethical standards then let the market conditions decide. Thats what is happening now, Lot of students are paying huge amount of fees and are then swindled by the management, who invited this action: The students themselves by leaving the company after getting trained. If many students are being swindled then many MT companies have closed down due to such attitudes of students. So, I think contract issue should be enforced and the choice remains with the company. MT companies cannot do CHARITY, they are in business too. Ameet Comment?

> Subject: Re: MTID Dear Amit, Please allow me to introduce E-MedTrans, Inc. an organization dedicated to medical transcription services. E-MedTrans, Inc. is located in Vallejo, California and has a channel partnership with Betasoftech of Mumbai. In fact, Kishore Degwekar, Chairman of Betasoftech introduced your organization to us. I enjoyed reading your Digest and am concerned about the name MT companies are getting. Sounds like couple of bad eggs in the basket. I do not know the state of affairs of MT training, MT company management, and technical institute's promises. Nothing like hands on training especially if you are catering to US market. The names and accent handicaps are to be handled. Regards, Ramesh Shamarao Comment?

> Subject: Reply to Dr. Ribotsky post Dear Dr. Ribotsky, I read your post about outsourcing to India and its benefits etc. Very interesting indeed. I am glad atleast one doctor is good enough to speak good about the medical transcription in India. Yes, there have been faulty administrations etc in the past few years but as the years have passed by, as in any business, the teething problems or the baby steps days are over and India is now looking forward to a professional way of dealing with their overseas clients. I hope your article will be an eye-opener for many people who are apprehensive about giving work to India. I lived in the United States in the 70s and 80s and still visit quite often as my daughter is studying there. I do see that Indians are striving hard with the Indian work force to deliver to the American Standards. Best regards, Meera Comment?

> Subject : False Promises made by WINTEL Institute of Medical Transcription, Sarita Vihar, New Delhi, India Dear Dr. Chatterjee, We are undergoing training at the WINTEL Institute of MT, in Sarita Vihar. Sir, we were given false information's that the Institute has affiliations with AO Tran Solutions Co. America. Also they haven't conducted regular classes to all the three batches, which have passed out with no job. They have promised us 100% placements with clear advertisements. Today they have done nothing. They have opened franchises at nearby places so that they could get it as a business, which earns them good money. We have paid them 25000/- with no results. They knew that they are unable to provide a proper job for anyone. So they have sent few students to these centers as faculties. We have spoiled our future; along this many other students may spoil their future. Please suggest us what to do. Yours sincerely C G Anbarasan (For Students Of WIMT) Comment?
