Subject: Demographics & Names in Medical Transcription

Hi Amit,

I have a small problem and I certainly do know that I
can get it solved in here.  The problem which not only
I but also a few of the units over here face is -
names .  When I mean "names", I am talking about the
correct spelling for the Patient name, dictator name,
CC doctor's names etc.  I believe that in most cases
the transcription unit gets a fax list of the days
patient and doctor detail or in some cases they have a
database.  But what do you do if you do not get them?

I want to know if there is any set standard practice
or procedure that one follows to help satisfy the
client in this area.  If there is one, I would be more
than happy if one can help me.  This is because it is
sometimes hard to convince doctors in US, once the
patient name or CC doctor's name is transcribed
incorrectly.

Thank you
Dr. John Nesan

Subject: The funny state of MT cos in Mumbai

Hi Amit & MTIDers!

It is just ironic to see that the local data entry
people are getting into this field.  Just last week I
overheard two so called MTs talking, keen as I was, I
asked them where they did their training.  They told
me it was a company called Tricom, I then asked them
the modus operandi for the training.. They told me
that they have one system for training, they just hear
words from a so called amplifier and then write what
ever the so called doctor dictates...

With over 3+years in the line and having a lot of
respect for this line, it is just pathetic to see that
this is the fate of MT in India...

In another place I heard a doc telling me that he has
never done a course of MT but he can proofread 4000
lines a day.. so this is the way they lure young minds
to this business. TRAINING IS THE BEST WAY TO
MAKE EASY MONEY...

I REALLY FEEL VERY SORRY.

Regards

Vivek Menon

Subject: Fate of MTs

Dear MTIDers,

I have completed a 2 month course in Medical Transcription.  I have
been going for practice for the last four months.  We are given the
same practice files again and again and are assured that work is
coming up in a week or 10 days time.  This has been going on for
the past 6 months.  Seeing an advertisement in a reputed English
daily, I joined the course because they assured for home based
transcription.  We paid a fee of Rs.27,500/-, and now we stand
nowhere.  As these are not big institutes, we don't know whether
our course will have any value outside.  This is now happening
everywhere, throughout the country.  Newspapers carry lot of
articles and ads. about Medical Transcription, in which I am sure
even 20% of the information is not authentic.  Our own institute
had given an article in the paper stating that it has a production
unit with 50 computers, whereas the fact is that there is no
production at all and they have only may be 25 computes.

Where do we go from here?

Thanking you,
Jayasri Rengarajan

Subject: CMT certification in India

Dear Amit and all,

This is just a note to share my amusement at your MT Times issue re
HealthScribe chappies visiting and flaying the Calcutta MT
industry. I am a Calcutta-trained MT (Sarah Jordan, 1995 or was it
'96?, setup called Scribonix),  now settled in Hyderabad.  I enjoy
reading your newsletter since it keeps me in touch with what is on
in MT in India and the US.  Also, your "editorials" are often
thought provoking and force thinking about things that we might not
in our busy schedule have had time for.  I also found your new year
edit useful.

I also wanted to share that the agency I work with, Worldtech, is
currently the largest in AP, has its own front office in the US,
services over 300 clients, has a dozen franchisees of whom five are
into live production, has a MT base of about 500, 200 of its own,
another 300 with its franchisees, does a daily average live
production of over 65000 lines, has its own webbased TASP that is
used by several agencies as well as ourselves, is a licensed vendor
for BCB products; the list goes on.

The reason I am writing to you is that healthscribe does have a
tie-up where it conducts its own AAMT certification program.
however, this is restricted for its own employees and possibly
comes with the sort of contract you wrote about in this issue of MT
Times.

It would be good if we could start a program in India where anyone
can take the certification test.  One of our MTs went to the US and
cleared the first part and took the second part here, but is there
any way we can take franchise from the testing agency and conduct
those tests here in India?  Please be assured of any support that
you might need in terms of infrastructure etc. Worldtech will only
be too happy to be involved in this process.

I am strongly of the opinion that MT India members should spearhead
and facilitate the open conduction of MTCP and CMT certification in
India for all. Any genuine players interested?

Looking forward to hearing from you all,

Subhorup Dasgupta

Subject: Dictation Systems

Hi Prajesh!

I read your email at MT India Digest. I need a little more
information about the system that you are currently using and the
problems that you are facing before I can help you streamline your
systems:

1.What kind of digital dictation devices are you using, I mean what
brand?
2.What kind of files do they create,is it DSS is it WAV or some
other kind?
3.How many megabytes is digital dictation device's flash card, and
how long a dictation can it hold?
4.What kind of software are you using to send the files by FTP to
the server?
5.How do you send the completed work back to the physician?
6.And last but not the least...what kind of systems problems are
you having right now
...a...is it with the amount of dictation each device or the flash
card can hold?
...b...is it the time taken to upload the files by the physician?
...c...is it that your customer has to upload the files manually?
...d...and how many physicians are using the digital dictation
devices?

Or if you have any other problems feel free to email me.

Thanks,
Andy Brown

Subject: Salary of Medical Transcriptionist

I would like to know what are the avenues for working part time as
a Medical Transcriptionist. I have spent 5 years in Oklahoma, USA
and am fairly confident in my ability to understand the American
accent. Since I am working full time at my current job from 10 am
to 6 pm, I would like to make a little extra income by working part
time.

Also I would like to know what are the pay scales for people
working full time as a medical transcriptionist.

Subject: Melissa Strikes Back !!!!!

Hi all!

A previously known variant of the Melissa virus, called
W97M_ASSILEM.B (also known as W97M/Melissa.W) is currently
spreading in the wild. This variant can affect both Windows and
Macintosh users, and was not previously detected by older antivirus
software due to its traveling in a slightly changed file format.

"ASSILEM.B" arrives via email in an attached document originally
entitled "Anniv.doc"; the subject header of the message reads
"Important Message From (name of infected user)" and the message
body contains the text "Here is that document you asked for . don't
show anyone else". Once inside an infected system, the virus sends
itself out to the first 50 users in each address book. A second
payload will also overwrite part of any active Word documents with
comical dialogue from a 1991episode of "The Simpsons" television
show. Subsequently emailed versions of the original infected
document may bear an altered filename (i.e. "Anniv1.doc").
