> Subject: MT training Dear MTIDers, Regarding training, as threaded below, there is a university in Hyderabad, Osmania University, which has had a medical transcription program, which was good, although not necessarily "world class". I had the experience of training some graduates of that university program last summer and they were very consistent in quality of work and motivated. The Model Curriculum for Medical Transcription published by AAMT is an excellent place for a training program to start, but in order to have a world class program, I feel you need the input of a world class medical transcription trainer or at least a world class medical transcriptionist. Nothing beats having a vocational trainer who has experience in the field--and I don't feel that training by a doctor (of medicine) necessarilty makes up for that. The greatest problem I found in my students when I was in India was their lack of skills in the English language. If a training program has a good supplementary course in English and idioms that is a big plus. Also, I teach medical transcription at a community college in the U.S., a program which I have been working to upgrade for 10 years. I think it is a very good program, and I think it is erroneous to say there are not good MT training programs in the U.S. The problem is so many have jumped on the bandwagon that there are good and also very bad training programs here as in other places. Also, I feel that medical knowledge is important as well as live files, especially having a background of general medical knowledge. The more you know about medicine, especially as practiced in the U.S. the better off you are. Years ago, when I was a "newbie" in medical transcription I began reading medical journals and even got a job in the medical library of the clinic where I worked in the health center of a California State University. I found that the more I read and understood about medicine the easier my job was, and also the more interesting it became. Best wishes. Tina Barton, CMT Comment?

, which imparts training in Medical Transcription. It has entered into collaboration with a party in Hyderabad. We had taken training in this concern , but were not given proper training and also were not assured of job after our training nor paid stipend. Our security deposit was also not refunded to us and we were also abused. The question that arises is how can a franchiser in the United States enter into an agreement for services when a case of cheating has been filed in the courts and the promoters have been branded as cheats in various newspapers in India and a probe is going on. It is also well established that they cheat everyone. It is for your awareness and to resist and see that you be careful. The unit is also opening an office in New Jersey in the United States. In case any information is required one may please feel free to mail me and I will update you. I am sorry that such type of institutions do exist and various MT training institutions in India offer them training facilities. Yours, Sudipta Sarangi Bhubaneswar, India Comment?

> Subject: Training woes!! Hello Everybody: Najmul's case is an eye-opener. I have been associated with one of the major players in the field of medical transcription and am now working as a production manager in a medical transcription company. Having been in this industry for more than 3 years now, I have seen the fate of different aspirants joining the course in order to become a qualified MT in a brief span of just 6 months. Many of the shrewd businessmen have tapped this opportunity and are minting money. This is like the Gold Rush they had back in America. But, we forget the fact that during the Gold Rush the people who made money were the ones who sold the spade. Similarly, during this MT rush, the people who are making money are not the MT-aspirants but the businessmen who are making them cough up the hard-earned money as a cost for their aspirations. I have never and would never recommend anybody to get any sort of medical transcription training from any institute. Most of these MT institutes are always ill-equipped, running just those pirated SUM tapes and the Photostats of the text-books written by Americans. Nobody heeds the fact that a person who is not well-acquainted with the basic level of English, the American version of it, and basic grammar cannot be trained into medical transcription. Through this column, I would request all those who wish to join the medical transcription industry to go for the in-house training facility of the already established running production companies, the companies with good credentials in the market. This way at least they won't be cheated. At the same time, if anyone associated with MT training is reading these lines, can I please request you to try your best the impart the real MT training and not to deceive the boy/girl who comes to you with a lot of hopes and really hard-earned money? > Subject: MT in India Dear Amit & friends in the MT field, I recently came to know that almost 60% of the work has been diverted out to the neighbouring countries i.e. Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. I just want to know that even though having a good resources in India as compared to them, why has the work been diverted? As far as I have known the market till now, I have understood that most of the companies are facing getting live work, this has been mainly because of the consultant's who take huge amounts from different companies and just promising them of the required number of lines, and nothing coming out of it. If people like us who have entered this field taking this as a carrier, where are we going to land, I just am not able to understand. Even after having a good experience of around 3 years I am facing problems, because you just simply cant' say that what is going to happen tomorrow. I just require some detailed information about the work coming in india and what is actually going to happen in the coming few months. With regards Manoj Comment?

Subject : Reg a transcriptionist's job Anil Potdar wrote( MTID#58): >Pl. advise me per return whether it is advisable for a person >like me who has completed my post-graduation. Whether there are >going to be good propspects in this. You have not given any details about where you wish to be employed. Anyway here are some facts : There are any number of companies in India but I regret to tell you that almost all of them are totally unreliable - I'll tell you why. Most of these MT companies wherever situated, barring exceptions, will promise you the following but will rarely keep their word: 1) An 8AM - 4PM working day, 6 day week Reality : You will end up working from 7.30 to 6PM on most days - sometimes even on Sundays. 2) A salary of 3,500-5000( B'lore or H'bad may offer you 6000 ). Reality: You will not be paid your salary properly. Either they will claim that your work is not up to the mark or since they are not getting work from their clients they are not able to make profits and hence they are unable to pay. In the worst cases they close down the company 3) A signed contract ensuring that you work at least for a year with either your degree certificate or a sum of Rs.25000-30000/- as a deposit with them, to be forfeited by you if you leave within that period. 4) Any other condition/ clause that is beneficial to the company but not to the MT. 5) Very often none of the above is given in writing so you have no recourse to any litigation when they do not fulfill their obligations . Please do not think that I am trying to frighten you. I am merely warning you so that you are aware of what you are up against when you go in search of a job. Every word of what I have written is based on my own experience and that of many others who seek my help. I am now on my own and would like to help people who write to me for any kind of advice on MT. As for going abroad let me warn you that American MT professionals have a very poor opinion of us( barring exceptions) and they are already agitated that work from their country is going out to India, so I am not sure that they are going to be happy about taking an Indian unless of course they test you and they find you very good. Please think carefully and find everything you can about a company before you seek employment in it. It is good to ask a friend or a neighbor who happens to really know that a company is good. > Subject: Need Help With Toll-free dictation & other ideas.. Dear Amit. I am based in Chicago and currently in the MT Industry since March of 1999. I have been a subscriber to your Digest since June of last year. I need some help in gaining some knowledge (information) and setting up toll-free dictations for the doctors we are currently providing medical transcriptions to here in the U.S. If you know any companies and or personnell who are currently providing these kinds of services and are reputable, please forward me their information. My goal is to design a very userfriendly system for the doctors and also to ease the headaches involved in the transfer of the data between India and the U.S. My firm is currently using Digital recorders to capture voice data and an FTP server to transfer it simultaneously to and from India. Are you aware of any combination of system or process where this process can be more efficient. One of the ways I feel this can be accomplished would be with the use of toll-free dictation. So the Doctor does not have to worry about dictating on a dictaphone, instead he/she can dictate from anywhere at anytime. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Prajesh Patel Comment?

> Subject: Free MT training in Delhi I wanted to ask the name of companies /institutions which provide FREE MT training in Delhi and later on absorb them in their in-house production units. If by chance, there are no companies like these, then which are the top ones in this field in Delhi which may charge money but provide quality training and later on in-house absorption.
