Helping you figure out those slick and glossy ads from companies recruiting, here is what they actually mean when they say - "JOIN OUR INCORPORATED, US BASED COMPANY" We have no time to train or talk to you; you'll have to introduce yourself to your co-workers - if there are any! "JOIN OUR FAST-PACED COMPANY" We have actually no work at present; however we work overtime in looking for work. "IMMEDIATE OPENING" The MT who used to have this job walked out a month ago. We're just running the ad. now. "COMPETITIVE ENVIRONMENT" We have a lot of turnover - in fact, we change our MTs and clients every month! "EXCITING AND PROFESSIONAL WORK ENVIRONMENT" Guys in grey suits will bore you with tales of midnight binges and their weekends on the golf greens. And of course, they are all US returned! "MUST BE DEADLINE ORIENTED" You'll be presented with six weeks of backlog on your first day - and be expected to clear it in a week! "FLEXIBLE HOURS" Three shifts; 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year! Work 48 hours a week and get paid for 36.:) "DUTIES WILL VARY" Anyone in the office can boss you around, including the system administrator and the janitor. "MUST HAVE AN EYE FOR DETAIL" We have no quality control systems or procedures! You have to be client ready!! "SEEKING CANDIDATES WITH A WIDE VARIETY OF EXPERIENCE" You'll need it to replace three people who just left, and were dealing with different specialties and difficult dictators! "PROBLEM-SOLVING SKILLS A MUST" You're walking into a company in perpetual chaos. Do not point this out to the management - you have to swim in this! "REQUIRES TEAM LEADERSHIP SKILLS" You'll have the responsibilities of an account manager, without the pay, perks, respect or even the credit! "GOOD COMMUNICATION SKILLS" Management communicates in something vaguely resembling Greek; you listen, try to figure out what they mean and want done. "ABILITY TO HANDLE A HEAVY WORKLOAD" You whine, you're fired. That's it for now ! Regards to all, Your Striving Moderator, Amit C.

> Subject: The process of quality assurance MTs are put on 100% proofreading when he/she begins transcription of any new account. Any MT maintaining a consistent above 98% accuracy comes into the fold of Quality Assurance Department. His proof rate maybe varied from 3% to 99% depending on his/her QA accuracy. A good MT is the one who maintains a low proof rate. The incentives per line can also be increased depending on their proof rates. QA accuracy This means quality assurance accuracy. A computer/manual program should track the accuracy of an MT and vary his/her proof rate. A general rule that could be followed is to put an MT on 3% proof rate once he/she maintains a consistent above 98% for about 1500 lines. It means that three out of every hundred of his/her reports will randomly be proofread and his/her future proof rate depends on the average accuracy of the QA reports. Proof rate Proof rate means the number of files of an MT that will go into Quality Assurance checks. This is usually out of every 100 reports. The usual questions one MT asks another: ? Hey! What's your line count for the day? ? What has been your proof rate this week? ? What was your QA accuracy of yesterday's reports? Regards to all, Kishore JS Comment?

> Subject: What are the accuracy levels? Dear Amit and MTIDers, I have been reading the MTID from last 6 months or more, and it is really appreciable for the efforts you have put in. As you have always being inspiring and spreading out the message of Medical Transcription, I have certain questions regarding accuracy. I will be thankful to you to know what are the exact levels of accuracy. What is the required accuracy from an medical transcriptionist? What is the required accuracy from an editor/proof reader? What is the required accuracy from an quality analyst? I would like to know that what are the accuracy levels for a general dictation, not a very hard one, or the one which is audible? Do let me know these levels, and also the time one requires to achieve these levels? There are lots of institutes mushrooming around and all claim to the doctors that, if they join with them, they will be reaching to a level of highest in a short span of time, and they will absorbed anywhere as editors/proof readers!!!! For I feel it's not that easy, then how do these people claim this sort of things. Thanking you, Dr. Rahul J Navandar Comment?

> Subject: Spam As someone who has interviewed many people on both sides of the spam issue for several publications, I have to chime in on the definition of spam. Spam and UCE are interchangeable. The fact that an e-mail has correct headers and an opt-out mechanism does not change the definition. Targeted or untargeted, forged or not forged, previous contact or no previous contact with the recipient--it doesn't matter. If the recipient didn't ask for it, it's unsolicited; if it's unsolicited, it's spam. Creating a false separation between the two only complicates matters and works to obscure the fact that advertising to unwilling recipients at their own expense is wrong. >From the Indiana University Knowledge Base: "In Internet parlance, the term 'spam' refers not to a famous canned meat product, but rather to a single article posted repeatedly to a large number of Usenet newsgroups, or unsolicited, often irrelevant e-mail sent to a large number of e-mail addresses. While the definition of spam used to be strictly quantity-based, it has evolved to include any unsolicited commercial e-mail or news posting." Content is also irrelevant. It can be an advertisement for porn sent indiscriminately to old ladies and children, or a solicitation for a charity e-mailed to people who have signed a guest book or donated previously. It's still spam. I suggest that we stop turning our brains inside out to justify forcing unwanted advertising into unwilling recipients' private, costly e-mail boxes--and instead put our minds to finding less intrusive and non-cost-shifting ways of advertising. Thanks for listening, Linda Formichelli, Independent Contractor Comment?
