=========MODERATOR COMMENT=====

Fellow MTIDers....

OK, I have a cold, a broken wrist and I'm irritable. But this
comment is long overdue.

Have we lost the war?

This morning when I checked my e-mail for the first time I had
about 300 messages. Of those, over 230 were unsolicited
commercial e-mail-- spam.

We haven't discussed the topic of spam here for some time.
Meanwhile the problem, and it is indeed a large problem, keeps
growing. There's no end to the quick buck morons who think spam
is quicker, easier and cheaper than their previous business
strategy of buying lottery tickets (which must be affecting State
income in India as ignorance tax revenues decrease).

Of course spam does not work, but that doesn't seem to limit
the assault given the seemingly endless supply of morons.

In the early days of the Internet we actually cared about this
problem -- and we actually fought it. Have we been whipped by the
idiots, dolts and other assorted lowlife who never learned that an
honest living requires honest hard work?

I'm about ready to assemble a team of hackers and put their
"talents" to good use. It's time for the great War on Spam to
begin in earnest.

Your Striving Moderator,
Amit

This discussion list has a lot of great people, with a wide range
of experiences (from the new recruit to the crusty old seasoned
captains of industry), and we all learn from one another when ideas
are shared and questions answered. But we could all do without the
blanket statements that, if you look around at 6 months of back
issues of this list, reverse themselves more times than a
politician on election year campaign trail.

Discussion is great; exchanges of ideas are great; opinions without
factual support (or those not based in reality as we collectively
know it) are not so great, and in fact, can be damaging, confusing
and downright useless.

My point, as in all my posts: use the right tool in the proper way
to maximize your message. Don't like a tool? Don't use it. But
don't discourage others when there are no clear cut right or
wrongs.

Subject: Re: Bloopers aplenty!!

Dear Fellow MTID'ers:

Decided to share this list of bloopers I've been accumulating...,
along with silly little comments that came to mind... :)

She does have muscle weakness in her hips, which make it difficult
for her to |get up out of chairs, or to do her hair. (um...her
hair??) [He explains later that she is a disabled hairdresser)

None of the anti-inflammatory agents have afforded him much pain.
(Well, let's keep trying until he "is" in pain!)

She does have her uterus in place. (Thank goodness..I'd hate for
her to misplace it!)

There have been some cancers in the family stomach. (I've heard
of  family sharing, but this is ridiculous!)

Having had a recent colonoscopy, I would try not to go in that
direction immediately. (After having a colonoscopy, I only went in
the direction of the nearest bathroom!)

Factors such as "hypogodism" (hypogonadism) should be excluded.

He has been under my "car" since November 1998.  (care)

We will swill her back in two months.   (see)

We may need to consider other *roots* of intervention  (routes).

..with worse "mooning" pain (morning)

Allergic to sulfa, iodine and "mice"  (-mycins)

History of headaches, "sexually" unchanged.  (essentially)   (No
more "honey I have a headache".)

"Face" edema in the lower extremities (trace)   (You've heard of
having a "long face", but all the way to the legs?)

He is on glyburide and Fosamax, and has been on "a ladder" since
April.  (the latter)

She is able to walk with the assistance of a "cone."  (cane)

His ankle still hurts, but he didn't want to be "castrated" today.
(casted)

The cells were arranged in a honey"bomb" pattern.  (honeycomb)

She has had disappearance of her sore mouth.

Her husband had died and was unable to come to her last scheduled
appointment.  (Death is no excuse).

He smoked three packs of cigarettes a day for many years, but now
*smacks* half a pack.

He has only three teeth remaining in his "axilla."  (maxilla)

I was able to see her "in a dress" her concerns and problems. (and
address) (They always make me wear those stupid gowns!)

If she continues to experience the right shoulder, we will need to
obtain an MRI. (the right shoulder pain)

She didn't have any pain relief with Celebrex, but these were
samples.  (huh? Maybe you get what you pay for...)

Subject: Well crafted prose and business

I am completely enthralled by the quality of the posts to this
list. I am an independent contractor and grammar professional for a
company based in Champaign, Illinois and what we lament the
most is the quality of written communication over this new medium.

Certainly e-mail and listservs are a hybrid communication (tool?),
presumably free from the caustic hand of some grandmotherly
English matron, instructing the life out of the language.
However, people judge you on how you communicate. Period. The
well-formed posts to this list, for the most part, stand out from
the crowd. The writers who can properly turn-a-phrase in his or her
missives gives that person a bit more cache when they are telling
me something that a) I have little or no knowledge of and b)
requires some persuasion.

Generally, what role does wonderfully crafted prose serve in your
businesses? Since much of what we do these days involves new
technology, how seduced are you by what the words in a particular
site say or mean? Can anyone recommend specific sites that marry
the word and visual content well? I haven't seen very many of them.

I must commend the people on this site for having a very good
command of the English language as compared to the individual
parties who are bulk emailing people and posting to web sites
wanting to get into medical transcription, as their grammar and
command of the language is very poor and probably contributes
greatly to the impression of medical transcription done in India
being a major joke.

Subject : Palmtop technology makes doctors' pad obsolete

A new handheld device could end the jokes about doctors' bad
handwriting. A Cincinnati-area company called PocketScript has
developed a wireless computer prescription pad that faxes or
e-mails typed medication orders from the doctor's office to the
patient's pharmacy. About 150 physicians are under contract to use
the fledgling company's product. The PocketScript software,
installed on a Windows CE or Pocket PC-compatible handheld
computer, also checks whether a patient's insurance company will
cover the prescribed medicine, warns the doctor about possible drug
interactions and keeps a record of all the patient's prescriptions.

Subject: WINDOWS 95 PERFORMANCE TIP

Hi Amit and everyone!

Free memory from the system!!

For freeing memory in DOS Windows,in the [386Enh] section of
'System.ini', add 'LocalLoadHigh=1'.

To remove drivespace:If you are not using DoubleSpace or
DriveSpace, delete 'drvspace.bin' and 'dblspace.bin'from both the
C: and C:Windows directories. This will free additional DOS memory
and speed system startup.

Regards,
Sherlock Holmes
