> Subject: Bloopers aplenty!! Hi everybody! In the early days of MT training there was one thing that our teacher told us and that was, we had to develop a sense of humor( if we already didn't possess one) because the MT line being as stressful as it is, it would be one of the most important ways of relieving our stress at the work place.Of course he added, the first thing is to learn to laugh at yourself and your mistakes before you laugh at someone else's. Since then it has been a long time but that was a good bit of advice. One of my colleagues and I used to laugh a lot and that was immensely helpul on days when the workload was particularly heavy and exhausting. In this context I'd like to share some of the hilarious 'bloopers'(as the Americans would call them)which I am sure many would funny. This would at the same time show us that we cannot really afford to make such mistakes, whether they emanate from poor listening skills or a misplaced punctuation mark or the omission of a comma. He had a birth mark removed from his left head. The testicle has become very, very swollen and painful, to the point he is almost unable to walk on it. By the time he was admitted, his rapid heart had stopped, and he was feeling better. Patient has chest pain if she lies on her left side for over a year. On the second day the knee was better and on the third day it had completely disappeared. The patient has been depressed ever since she began seeing me in 1993. Patient was released to outpatient department without dressing. I have suggested that he loosen his pants before standing, and then, he stands with the help of his wife, they should fall to the floor Discharge status: Alive but without permission. The patient will need disposition, and therefore we will get Dr. Smith to dispose of him. Healthy appearing decrepit 69 year-old male, mentally alert but forgetful. The patient refused an autopsy. The patient has no past history of suicides. The patient expired on the floor uneventfully. Patient has left his white blood cells at another hospital. The patient's past medical history has been remarkably insignificant with only a 40 pound weight gain in the past three days. She slipped on the ice and apparently her legs went in separate directions in early December. The patient had waffles for breakfast and anorexia for lunch. Skin:somewhat pale but present. Patient was seen in consultation by Dr Jones, who felt that we should sit on the abdomen and I agree. Patient has two teenage children but no other abnormalities. Her husband died and was buried over the weekend, and she has no complaints referable to her pelvis. "The patient canceled her fibersigmoidoscopy because her father was ill as we had planned. Patient has redness and swelling of right great toe. She has actually had this removed several times in the past and one time it just fell off on its own. She is scheduled for office surgery to remove it again in early August. The patient was transferred back to the nursing home on post-op day 6 tolerating a regular diet, ambulating with assistance, and with her bowels moving The patient was present at the time of death The patient is having difficulty breathing and smothering The patient had pain in both of her lower legs. The patient says that they have been there now for approximately two weeks. The left knee has been present for about two years and is somewhat painful. So, MTs,editors, proofreaders, QAs, look out!! Be sharp or or prepare to ship out!! Saagarika Haran Comment?

> Subject: REQUEST HELP AND GUIDANCE ! Hi there MTIDers! We have set up small sophisticated MT Unit in Bangalore with 32 PCs and 2 Servers with Power Generator and other infrastructure facilities. We also interviewed MTs and found very good ones with experienced people to work for us. We were promised work by a big consulting company in US with links with several hospitals and therefore,we did not work on getting independent contracts. Unfortunately, the company who promised work did not fulfill their committment thereby leaving us in lurch. We have been losing money for 6 months. We have tried every available source to get MT jobs. However, there does'nt seem to be a right link to Overseas Customers through the available sites. Can anyone suggest how one should go about getting jobs? I will greatly appreciate your advise on this matter. Thanking you, Sincerely, Anwar Ajani Comment?

> Subject: International English - Are we obsessed with spelling and grammar? Dear Fellow MTID'ers: Greetings from sunny London ! I've been *temporarily* away from MTID while I moved to London from India, and have been settling down. I re-joined the list on Sunday, and have been browsing through the archives to find we are right in the middle of an interesting discussion on "International" English. I'm more than a little surprised that even the *broad-minded* discussants limited their thoughts and views to spelling and usage issues as seen in the U.S. and U.K. There are innumerable *international* flavours -- or is it flavors ?! -- of the language, as my short stint in London has already shown me. There are 9 surgeons in our unit -- Belgian, Portugese, English, Indian, Danish, American, Chinese, Spanish and Czech -- and I see and hear different variants of "English" daily !!! And for those who still subscribe to the view that the vast majority of English speakers hail from the United States or Kingdom -- watch out for the HINGLISH speakers -- that's the name we give to the Indian language mix of Hindi and English. At the speed at which India is getting wired, it won't be long before we all are exposed to the funny, different, strange and sometimes downright incomprehensible twists of the English language as used by Hinglish-ians !!! Remember, there are over 1 billion of these species, and even if just 1 percent get online, there will be TEN MILLION users -- a number large enough to rival the British and American online communities, I'd presume !!! So then do I have suggestions? Yes, I do. Stop obsessing over spelling and grammar :-) As I once posted to the E-pub discussion group a few months ago, we write / publish / design in order to COMMUNICATE with our audience. Language is just one aspect of that effort. Aesthetics, appearance, layout, colour choice, loading speed of webpages, customer service, ease of use -- all these too are aspects of communication -- ones maybe even more important than purity of language usage and correctness of grammar. Much depends on the purpose of your work online. And your success or failure is measured in terms of whether or not you achieve what you set out to, not by having letter-perfect spelling or excellent grammar. Cool it, do your own thing, and there will be "No Problem" !!! Dr. Mani Sivasubramanian, M.D. Heart Disease Online Comment?

> Subject: Re: The English Language Just my two cents on the English issue: English spellings vs. American spellings isn't a huge issue for me. Even though I'm American, I find certain spellings look nicer (grey for instance) aesthetically. Where I do think people should focus their attention, however, is on proof reading. Run a spell check, proof read, and if you don't know someone who is good at copy editing, hire someone. Yes, do all three. Spelling and grammar editors do NOT catch usage errors. Trust me, it will save your professional image. I can't count the number of times I have seen people "loosing" a game, "curving" their "sweat" tooth, and worse. Not to mention the "your" vs. "you're", "to", "two", "too" mix-ups, etc. Their is know kwiker weigh to make me put up my credit card and hit my "Back" button, and I feel fairly certain a lot of peeple feal the saim weigh. (Serious sentence typed totally tongue-in-cheek ;-) ) Anne McKay Comment?

> Subject : Extortion marketing Hi Amit and list, You all remember AllAdvantage right, you know the 'pay-to-surf' view bar company. Curious, I downloaded the thing when it first came out, had issues with it (didn't work with Netscape), and got rid of it. I usually ignore their email, but today I decided to skim one... <snip> Please note that If you choose not to use your Viewbar software -- so that your account is inactive (no surfing at all) for three months -- we will charge you USD 6.00 for those three months, and then USD 2.00 per month thereafter as an account maintenance fee. Such charges will continue until you become active again (meaning you surf for at least one hour); your account reaches zero; or your account is terminated according to any of the ways specified in the Membership Agreement. Of course, your account will not go below zero. </snip> This is one of the most bizarre marketing tactics I've seen yet. Entice 'em, woo 'em, seduce 'em, and if all else fails threaten 'em! Say good bye to viral marketing, extortion marketing is here! Amit, if I don't send anything in to the list for a while maybe you should send me a bill.:) I thought this was just goofy enough to share. I just hope Caltiger is not on the same grid - free connectivity and everything!! Cheers all, Vamshi Krishna Comment?

> Subject: Who's logged on to the network on my Windows PC? Hi amit and everyone!
What's the easy way of finding out which user is logged into the network on a Win 95 client PC? In NT Workstation, just pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL does the trick. If you're connected to a NetWare server, right-clicking Network Neighborhood and choosing 'Who am I' will do the trick. If you're on Win 95 OSR 2 or later click on the 'Log off' option on the Start Menu. That will show the currently logged user's name. Regards, Sherlock Holmes
