> Subject: 98% accuracy? Hello, I am curious as to what methods MTSO's use to calculate the accuracy of MTs? I've never done that as defined in the AAMT BOS as it would be a time-consuming process. I considered "98%" simply meant there were almost no errors in the final product - i.e. the product was client ready! A lot of services guarantee accuracy, however, so I'd like to know how that is done practically. Also, when paying MTs based on productivity - do we deduct from the MT's pay for "errors"? What is counted as an error and what is not? Some definite parameters would help. Regards, Jiten Aggarwal Rashi Technologies Pvt. Ltd. Comment?

> Subject: Real value of voice recognition Hi! Nicolas Rao wrote: >the astonishing accomplishments in continuous speech >recognition technology might actually not be a net societal good!! A kind and thoughtful doctor doing dictation will normally have mercy on the typist when it comes to a word like dysphagia and spell it out. D as in dog, y as in yesterday, s as in Sam . . . That's because dysphagia, a condition marked by swallowing difficulties, sounds mighty close to dysphasia, the condition for a brain damage imposed speaking problem. The question is, if a human being who does medical transcription for a living has difficulty discerning between the two terms, how can a computer tell the difference? Talk to anyone peddling speech recognition technology and they'll say the medical world is about to change the way it does business. Reports can be done the next day or even in hours. Best of all there will be no tedious scrolling through text looking for mistakes. The technology has finally caught up to itself. But talk to physicians, and they're not so sure speech recognition technology is ready for prime time. Despite such lingering doubts, there is little disagreement that great strides have been made during the last few years in speech recognition technology. However, the recognition systems are still too high maintenance for the average user. Further, the user needs more than just basic computer skills. For the person who is dedicated and has a real need for the technology, it's probably there right now; for the casual user it's not. Devices are now rigged with the ability to build on a person's speaking patterns, picking up and adjusting for grammatical peculiarities. But in medicine with its vast reservoirs of terminology, a device may become confused if multiple speakers, especially those from different specialities, are using it. Speech recognition needs to be repackaged. As the technology is being sold-as an open-ended device where you talk into a microphone-it's lousy! Speech recognition's greatest potential lies in voice command technology, where computers follow humans' instructions, This speech interface gives you another pair of hands - that's where the real value of voice recognition lies! > Subject: Language (just for fun!) Hi Amit & MTIDer's, This is one of those things that floats around the e-mail system. I have no idea where it comes from, but I thought you might enjoy it after all the ridiculous bickering about language. ----------------------------- "EuroEnglish" The European Union commissioners have announced that an agreement has been reached to adopt English as the preferred language for European communications, rather than German, which was the other possibility. As part of the negotiations, Her Majesty's Government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a five-year phased plan for what will be known as EuroEnglish (Euro for short). In the first year, 's' will be used instead of the soft 'c'. Sertainly, sivil servants will resieve this news with joy. Also, the hard 'c' will be replaced with 'k.' Not only will this klear up konfusion, but typewriters kan have one less letter. There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year, when the troublesome 'ph' will be replaced by 'f'. This will make words like 'fotograf' 20 per sent shorter. In the third year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible. Governments will enkourage the removal of double letters, which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling. Also, al wil agre that the horible mes of silent 'e's in the languag is disgrasful, and they would go. By the fourth year, peopl wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing 'th' by 'z' and 'w' by 'v'. During ze fifz year, ze unesesary 'o' kan be dropd from vords kontaining 'ou', and similar changes vud of kors; be aplid to ozer kombinations of leters. After zis fifz yer, ve vil hav a reli sensibl riten styl. Zer vil b no mor trubls or difikultis and evrivun vil find it ezi tu understand ech ozer. Ze drem vil finali kum tru. ----------------------------- :) John Paul Comment?

We, at Ascent Infoserve P. Ltd., a 80-MT company in Bangalore, do NOT charge a fee to train MTs. In fact, we pay a stipend to all trainees. We have stopped training from "scratch" after the first 100. Now, we train candidates who have at least a 3-month training under their belt -after a very strict screening process.
