can deliver an instant job even at midnight. It would be
interesting to know whether there are any such companies.

It depends on scheduling. Cindy's talking about clinic work, and
clinics generally aren't open all night, like hospitals. When I was
operations manager for hospital accounts, I leveraged
transcriptionists working across the time zones and different
hours to meet TAT.

In my experience, transcription coming from India had to wait for
US editors to get up and proof it, anyway, nullifying the time zone
advantage.

I am going to do my best to explain this. On my different accounts,
the providers have their own dictation schedule to which they
pretty much adhere to and myself and my staff knows this. I've got
several MDs who like to dictate at midnight. The MT who works
on this account knows this and she is what we call a "night owl,"
so it is done. However, I don't send the work to my clients to
where it goes directly to print. We either e-mail or PCA the work
directly to the client and the medical secretary pulls it down for
distribution. It's half and half really where either the secretary
pulls it down or the MD. I don't have set shifts so to speak, there
are MTs that just like to work at different times that covers me
pretty much around the clock.

For the most part, work is pulled down during American business
hours. If there is editing to be done, either the secretary or MD
does that. One particularly large clinic is 24/7 to which I send
the work directly to the office manager at home, but yet the
workload is lighter on the weekends too.

I think the Indian companies are targeting hospitals as clients in
the big 4 reports, whereas I do clinics, practices and hospital
overflow. I've already cut my teeth with the big 4, find it to be a
complete pain with terrible dictators, and I don't target that
market anymore. I'm to the point now to where I offer only
certain services and get picky. This hasn't hurt business any
either. In the beginning, my clients were running my life and
now I choose to run my own with the times that I am available.

Subject : Quickly accessing the Internet

Hi MTIDers!

If you're on a network that's patched directly to the Internet, you
probably keep Internet Explorer minimized on your taskbar all day
long so that you can quickly and easily access the Web when you
need something.

However, the whole time that Internet Explorer is running in the
background, it's using valuable system resources that could be put
to better use enhancing the performance of other tasks, such as
calculating spreadsheet formulas in Excel.

A better solution to quickly access the Internet is to create an
Address toolbar. You can do this by right-clicking on the taskbar
and selecting Toolbars/Address from the context menu. Then, move
the Address toolbar to the top of your desktop and configure it to
use the Auto Hide and Always On Top features. Now, when you
need to access the Internet, just move your cursor to the top of
the screen and when the Address toolbar appears, type
in the address. When you do, Internet Explorer launches and
connects to the requested site.

Wg Cdr (Dr) D Lavanian

Subject: Are You Secured ???

Dear MTIDers,

What can you do to protect your network?

-Make sure no one person is controlling the system front to back ,
have multiple people responsible for security
-Supervisory rights should be given to as few people as possible.
-Back up all systems regularly at least weekly.
-Make sure  every person logs on by using password.
-Have a strict sign-in/sign-out system for backups.
-Always have a current copy of the backup tape stored remotely.
-Do backups of desktops and laptops as well as servers.
-Rotate backup tapes - don't keep using the same one over and over
again.(Father-Son-Grandson-Father-Son-Grand Son)
-Change passwords every month.
-Keep servers in a secured area.
-Stay up-to-date on software patches.
-Use intrusion-detection software that alerts you when you are
being hit.
-Make sure to check code before it is entered into the system.
-Spend at least 3% to 5% of the IT budget on information security.
-Train information security personnel to be aware of any employee
who shows signs of being troubled or disgruntled, particularly if
that employee holds an information-critical position.
-Monitor the network - set up software that will alert you if the
person is working in a different part of the network or at a
different time than usual.
-Scan e-mail to see what's going out of the company, double-check
backups
-Make sure the person in charge of the system is not the same
person
in charge of the backup.
-Have specific policies and punishments built into employee
contracts.
-Make sure critical IT workers are bonded.

Vishal Bindra
