I like to update myself of this line which I had once taken up. I should say that I was a Medical Transcriptionist for some time. I underwent a so to be six months training in 2000 which was extended to almost 9 months. After the training was over we were promised a stipend of 3,500 for the first 3 months and then would be confirmed thereafter. But the boss was not able to pay us the required amount. This then lead us 120 employees to fight back and thereafter to quit our jobs hence remaining unemployed because there was no other MT company in Goa. Our company was one of the 2 companies which opened in full swing in Goa and then had to shut down throwing many unemployed. There are many self motivated and skilled MT's out here. Many have tried to get into home transcription but that too turned out to be a failure. On the other hand, not only in Goa but I heard that across the state, many companies have closed down due to lack of funds to pay the employees. With the Voice Recognition Software coming up will Medical Transcription last for long? I would like to know the benefits in acquiring such a job and the career prospective in this current situation. One is left totally confused in life when such situations occur. Where is one's future? I know this line is really rewarding but not rewarding to the Goans who are unable to work in other places as MT's. Many people are afraid to step into this field again with fear of the company closing down or unable to pay the salaries. I know this letter won't be of help to you, but I would be glad if you could advice me on this career and if possible be of assistance in providing a helping hand in home transcription. Awaiting your reply at the earliest. Thanking you Claire Rocha Melo [MODERATOR COMMENT] Dear Claire, This has been talked of so many times, so I would try to be brief and candid. Whatever be the reason the company closed down, I have reservations about the quality of training you received. I might be wrong, but if your basic training was not upto the mark - your are still at first base. There are ENOUGH job opportunities all over India in MT. Goa might have one someday, but if you want to encash on the time and effort already invested in - it would be advisable to temporarily migrate to cities where MT units are thriving. Home transcription is not an option at the entry level in India - I doubt if it is viable even in the US today for newbies. Depending on your basic skills it will take you 1-2 years working in a standard company to come upto an acceptable level of accuracy. If your skills are going to stay at entry level i.e. about 90% by about 2005, I strongly suspect software will be a strong competitor!:) Just another clarification - speech recognition and voice recognition are different things altogether. VR is not a technology used in MT - MTSOs use that acronym to mean voluntary retirement! I hope this helps. Probably senior members on this list might be able to give you better career guidance, and more specific to your case. But believe me, there are good companies in both Maharashtra and Gujrat who are doing well. Amit C. Comment?

++++ new post - different topic ++++ From: Joseph Johnson <jjfi@h...> Subject: Help!!!!! Dear Dr. Chatterjee, Hi! I am Joseph Johnson and I am an MT having six years of experience in this particular field. I would like to take few suggestions from you. Recently I have been working for an American Company. I have worked for them for 3 months and they owe me around 3000 dollers and they have not paid up till now. They had paid one cheque but it got returned. I have all the backup of the work I did for them, their correspondence mails, and a returned cheque. Is there any law through which I can sue them. Can I do something to get my money back. Please guide me. (I am enclosing their mail as reference) Thanks Joe {From: Andrea Caporale (Scribes NW) <andreac@s...> To: Joe Johnson - MT jjfi@h... Sent: Friday, January 25, 2002 3:19 AM Subject: Line Pay Rate Joe: I am in the processing of updating everyones contract as advised by my attorney for the new year. We are incorporating the business this month so he has made a suggestion to send out new contracts reflecting this new change to the business. Just a bit of information on some changes taking place here with us. I am setting you up on a per line rate of 0.7 cents per 65 character line. You can add this to your MPCount. At this time, I am just letting you know that we are updating everyones contracts for this year and I will get you the updated version so you can sign it and mail this to me. My attorney has not finished the details of this new contract yet, but I will send it to you as soon as I get it. Just wanted to give you what I am setting up as your per line rate of pay. Could you also send me your address so I will have this on record when mailing out your pay check each month? Thanks, Andrea} [MODERATOR COMMENT] You can definitely sue - but do add up your costs. Collection agencies will typically charge at least 30% of the monies owed. Since your amount is small, going through small claims court would be a better option and less costly proposition. What was the reason given for the check being returned by the bank? Also are they communicating by mail/phone now? Is the address below correct - I got it from their website: Scribes Northwest Tualatin, Oregon 97062 Toll-Free Voicemail/Fax#: 1-888-522-6507 info@s... <info@s...> Also, this entity does not appear to be incorporated yet - that could make it more difficult for them to declare the company bankrupt and walk away! I would welcome list members suggestions. This is an issue we must joint and aggressively address. Amit C. Comment?

===========CONTINUING============ From: Stella Olson <solson4444@e...> Subject: News Just keep sending news like you always have. I have found that your newsletter is most interesting and keeps individuals informed. That's what news is all about; INFORMATION. Sounds to me like someone spewing "Sour Grapes" and that's unfortunate. I have never found your news to be hawking any particular service or company. JUST PLAIN INFORMATION. Thank you for keeping me updated. Stella Olson, CMT, FAMT Comment?

++++ new post - different topic ++++ From: Mustafa Bhatti <tranzkriptor@h...> Subject: HIPAA Hi all! I read your request regarding information on HIPAA, this is the link where you can find it. http://aspe.hhs.gov/admnsimp/ I have also been trying to find out what are the issues regarding offshore transcription, which vary from complete restriction on offshore transcription to more security. In my personal opinion the later is more valid. However, I have encountered requests where the client did not want the work to go offshore. The reason for this however, was not clear as to whether it is because of HIPAA or other issues like quality. Regards, Mustafa Bhatti BDM www.digitalaxes.com Comment?

++++ new post - same topic ++++ From: Global Transcripts <globaltranscripts@y...> Subject: Meera Sankriti about HIPPA Hello MTIDers! I read a line said by Meera Sankriti about HIPPA, I would like to ask her what does she know about MT and HIPPA, or as usual has she heard it from someone, is she still trying to learn about it or is she still in the same business of looting companies in the name of training and getting them work. Mr Amit if you are in any way associated with this lady I would like to warn you seriously that this lady is a crook, be-aware of her. I would also like to warn all the readers of MTIndia about her, we have burnt our fingers for the sum of rupees three lacs with this lady, and if you have any doubts about this you can contact me and I can prove it out to you. We have also filed a legal case against her. I think MT India is for helping MT companies and for giving the companies the current info in the market and save them from frauds, so please let your readers know about this. Regards, Vishal Gupta Global Transcripts [MODERATOR COMMENT] Vishal - I don't see how you can draw an "association" between MTIndia and anyone participating on this list. List members are independent entities by themselves, and posting, or being a member doesn't create an association beyond just that. In a similar vein, I am not associated with you, and posting your message does not imply that we are validating the correctness or otherwise, of your statement. This is an open forum - and individuals are responsible for their actions - on or off this list. Amit C. Comment?
